Create a policy and post the rules
Keeping an office kitchen clean is everybody’s job, but everybody has a different understanding of what a clean kitchen entails. To make sure everybody is on the same page create a defined list of procedures and post them in a visible location, for example over the kitchen sink. Listing simple tasks, such as washing dishes as soon as you have finished with them, may seem obvious, but some people need a reminder.
Set a fridge purge schedule
Make sure old employee lunches don’t hang around in your fridge forever by establishing a weekly fridge clean out. Set a time and day of the week for the clean, for example Friday at 3pm, and all unlabeled foods that are in the fridge at this time get thrown out. Make sure all employees are notified of this policy via email so that no one loses their lunch! It’s best to nominate one person to perform this task every week, so they can recognize quickly if any containers have taken up residency from one week to the next.
Have the right tools available
Keep a full supply of kitchen cleaning products, sponges and cloths available in an easily accessible location, such as under the kitchen sink. It’s amazing how many people will simply leave a dish that needs to be washed if they think the detergent has run out.
